Extension of Phonetic Society of Japan New Member’s Campaign (until October 31st, 2014)

Phonetic Society of Japan New Member’s Campaign has now been extended to October 31st, 2014. No admission fee is required during the campaign (1000 yen after October 31st). New members joining the Society during the campaign will receive the 80th anniversary DVD. The 80th anniversary DVD is a two-DVD set including the first to the 213rd issues of the Society newsletters. Please see the “Membership” page of the PSJ website for further details.

  • Resons:
    1. The development of “Online Japanese Accent Dictionary” is an application of speech synthesis to education. The system is of great value to the educational field. OJAD is a research outcome that brings together the basic studies of accent and its application.
    2. OJAD has continued to improve after its release based on teachers and learners’ feedback.
    3. OJAD group proposes its manner of utilization in classrooms, promotes learners’ autonomous learning, and organizes workshops.
    4. OJAD can be accessed freely by Japanese learners. Learners are able to listen to accent immediately with a user-friendly interface. The system is expected to have a significant effect on the society.
    5. OJAD has launched its operation on multilingual environment.

Tama Plaza Science Festival

  • Date: 9:30am-4:00pm, Saturday, November 16th
    (free, no reservation needed, rain-or-shine event)

    (younger children can participate in some activities)

Phonetics Promotion Committee will run a booth this year at science experiment festival aimed for elementary school students. We will provide experiments to record voices, extract sound waves and spectrogram, compare with other people’s voices, and learn about how speech is produced. We will also have many other scientific experiments. Come and enjoy the fun experiments!

The convention party will be held on Day 1 (6pm, Saturday, September 28th) at first floor of the North Campus Store and Restaurant. Participation fee is 5000 yen for members, 3000 yen for students. Please make a reservation by preferably September 20th by sending your name and membership status (student member, non-student member, non-member) to psj.party2013@gmail.com. Participation without reservation will only be accepted when there is vacancy. Pre-registration is strongly recommended.

[Lunch]

The venue will not provide lunches on the two days. The cafeteria (located on the second floor of Student Union Hall, open from 11:00am-1:30pm) and convenience store (located on the first floor, open from 9:00am-2:00pm) will be available only on Day 1. There are no restaurants or stores near the campus, so please bring your lunch to the venue on Day 2.

A nursery room will be provided during the annual convention.

The Phonetics Society of Japan will provide a nursery room during the conference with the cooperation of the venue. The fee is at a reasonable price (500 yen / hour for one child). Participants with small children are encouraged to use this system. Please make a reservation in advance if you wish to use this system. The deadline for making reservations is 5pm, Tuesday, September 10th. We will consider the number of babysitters to hire after we receive reservation emails. You will not be able to use this system if you do not make a reservation. Please send an email to psj-hoiku@nacos.com if you would like to make a reservation or ask for further information.
