Call for Oral/Poster Presentations for the 32nd General Meeting of PSJ

The information of the 32nd General Meeting is as follows.

Submissions for oral/poster presentations (both to be held in the afternoon of Day 1) and workshop proposals (morning of Day 2) are now open. Please read the submission guidelines carefully and submit your oral/poster presentation proposals through our electronic submission page.

Guideline for submission

  1. The presenter must be a member of the Phonetics Society of Japan.
    Non-members may submit if the first author is a member.
    First authors must be members at time of submission.
    Please check whether the first author has paid the annual membership fee for this year at the time of submission.
    Submission may be cancelled if unpaid by the submission deadline.

  2. Only one submission (oral or poster) is permitted as the first author.
  3. If the first author is eligible for consideration or Outstanding Article Award (either he/she is a graduate student or younger than 41 years old as of September 15th, 2018), please let us know whether your submission would like to be considered for the award
  4. Papers submitted to or scheduled to be submitted to other conferences will not be accepted.
  5. The abstract should include results available at the time of submission.
    Papers with only experiment plans will not be accepted.
  6. Applicants may choose the presentation form (oral or poster), but if you put a check on the “open to change”, the final decision will be made by the committee.
  7. Notification of acceptance will be sent around June 27th, 2018.
    If accepted, please submit the full paper in PDF format by Wednesday, July 30th, 2018 via the online submission system.
    Late submission may not be published on the website.
    Please note that the paper will be uploaded to the website as is.
  8. Format of papers are the same for oral and poster presentations. (less than 6 pages in A4 sized paper)
  9. Languages used for presentations are limited to Japanese and English.
    Please write the title and abstract in the same language.
    If accepted, please write the paper in the language specified at the time of submission, and give your presentation in that language.
  10. Distribution of additional materials on the day of presentation is prohibited.
  11. Papers will be made public on the PSJ website before the conference dates. We do not provide hard copies.
  12. Abstracts will be published in the Journal of Phonetic Society of Japan after the conference.

    Now Accepting Applications for the FY2017 Academic Research Incentive Award of the Phonetic Society of Japan

    The Academic Research Incentive Award was established in FY2012 by the Phonetic Society of Japan to encourage research and development in phonetics. This award consists of a certificate recognizing excellent work or activity contributing to the development and dissemination of phonetics by members of the Society and an additional prize of 50,000 yen

    We are accepting applications for FY2017 as described below. You are cordially invited to apply.

    Guidelines for Application for the FY2017 Academic Research Incentive Award of the PSJ

    Eligibility for application:
    Eligibility is limited to members of the Society who have paid their dues for the current fiscal year. In case of group application, group representatives must be members of the Society who have paid their dues for the current fiscal year. Collective members and supporting members are not eligible.
    Works or activities eligible for consideration:
    Research and education works or activities from the last five fiscal years including the current fiscal year, other than research papers and verbal presentations, contributing to the development and dissemination of phonetics, including publications such as textbooks and dictionaries, audio sources and corpora, teaching materials and aids, teaching and diagnostic methods, and software and electronic tools.

    Please send the necessary application forms to the e-mail address below.
    Note: Please also submit any necessary physical supporting materials relevant to the applicant’s work.

    In this seminar, you will learn the basic acoustic, physiological, and perceptual features of emotional speech, as well as emotional speech in acting, cultural and individual differences, and various research methods concerning emptional speech.You are able to learn how to express emotions via voice in different cultures, performances and situations, so we welcome not only researchers but also language teachers, voice-over actors, actors, and singers. (The lecture will be held in English, but Q&A in Japanese is possible.)

    Paper Release on JSTAGE

    We have been working on transferring the “Journal of the Phonetic Society of Japan” from CiNII-ELS to JSTAGE. We have now finished transferring articles from Vol.1-19 to JSTAGE where you can search and read articles. Since articles from Vol.20 onward are already on JSTAGE, you are now able to search and read all articles (including reviews and article reviews) on JSTAGE.

    To overview the “Journal of the Phonetic Society of Japan”, insert “Journal of the Phonetic Society of Japan” in the search box under “Titles” at the upper right corner on the JSTAGE website (see following URL). There will only be one search result, so click on the journal title. All articles from Vol.1-20 will be listed.

    Obituary (Professor Osamu Fujimura)

    We regret to announce that Professor Osamu Fujimura passed away on March 13th. Professor Fujimura was a great pioneer in the field of speech science. He served as Professor at the Research Institute of Logopedics and Phoniatrics in the Faculty of Medicine at The University of Tokyo, Director at Bell Laboratories, and Professor at The Ohio State University. He had recently moved to Kona, Hawaii to receive medical treatment. The Special Issue of the Journal of the Phonetic Society of Japan entitled “Adventures in Speech Science: Focus on the C/D Model and Its Impact on Phonetics & Phonology” was published in honor of Professor Osamu Fujimura. He provided researchers with continuous support and encouragement, and will be sorely missed.

    Digitizing PSJ publications

    As the Phonetic Society of Japan celebrates its 90th anniversary this year, we are working on digitizing our intellectual property such as “The Study of Sounds” for the purpose of preserving valuable works, making them easily accessible online, and cost reduction. We would like to ask for your understanding and cooperation especially from the authors and those involved in the publication process.
    We will distribute a USB memory stick with The Study of Sounds at the 30th General Meeting of the PSJ which is to be held at Waseda University on September 17th – 18th.
