The latest issue of the Journal of the Phonetic Society of Japan (or Onsei Kenkyu) volume 23 is now available for download on J-STAGE.
Obituary
We are deeply saddened to announce that Professor Hiroyuki Umeda passed away on July 1st, 2019, at the age of 89. He served as the eighth President of the Phonetic Society of Japan from 1998 to 2001. His family held a funeral service in his memory on July 6th, 2019. Our dear colleague and mentor will be sorely missed.

You can now read “The Phonetic Society of Japan finance remediation measures” on the Journal of the Phonetic Society of Japan.
Please read the following for a summary.
Measure 1: Accepted papers will be electronically released sequentially and will be collectively published as “Journal of the Phonetic Society of Japan” at the end of the year.
We would like to explain once again of the definition of “sequentially” as this term may have caused misunderstandings. Papers accepted up until April will be made public on J-STAGE in April, papers accepted up until August will be made public in August, and papers accepted up until December will be made public in December.
Measure 2: Mailing of “Journal of the Phonetic Society of Japan” will be optional.
The journal will be mailed only to members who select “yes” to “Would you like to have the journal mailed to you?” (*wording may change) when they pay the annual membership fee. The journal is published once a year. Please be aware that the journal will not be mailed to you if you do not select “yes”. We are now working on the configuration of MyPage, where you will be able to change and check your settings for this feature.

Now Accepting Applications for the FY2018 Academic Research Incentive Award of the Phonetic Society of Japan
The Academic Research Incentive Award was established in FY2012 by the Phonetic Society of Japan to encourage research and development in phonetics. This award consists of a certificate recognizing excellent work or activity contributing to the development and dissemination of phonetics by members of the Society and an additional prize of 50,000 yen

Guidelines for Application for the FY2018 Academic Research Incentive Award of the PSJ
- Eligibility for application:
- Eligibility is limited to members of the Society who have paid their dues for the current fiscal year. In case of group application, group representatives must be members of the Society who have paid their dues for the current fiscal year. Collective members and supporting members are not eligible.
- Works or activities eligible for consideration:
- Research and education works or activities from the last eight fiscal years including the current fiscal year, other than research papers and verbal presentations, contributing to the development and dissemination of phonetics, including publications such as textbooks and dictionaries, audio sources and corpora, teaching materials and aids, teaching and diagnostic methods, and software and electronic tools.
- Application method:

- Summary of work or activity (one sheet of A4-sized paper in approx. 1,200 characters, together with necessary photos, etc.)

- Note 2: If electronic data other than websites are submitted in support of the work, submit the data as supporting materials relevant to the applicant’s work as described in (c).
- Indicate if submitting physical supporting materials relevant to the applicant’s work
- Note 1: Submit the actual work if the work is a book or other physical medium.
- Note 2: It is possible to submit sound or video materials relevant to the applicant’s work. However, they should be submitted in a format independent of any special device or software for reproduction.
- Note 3: Send supporting materials by simple registered mail (You can use the letter pack service) and write “FY2018 applicant’s work for the Academic Research Incentive Award of the Phonetic Society of Japan” in red on the cover.

Symposiums at Regular Meetings are to offer opportunities for presenters and audience to have discussions on a particular topic after the talks by several presenters. The report at the symposium does not have to be completed work; rather it is aimed for research projects in progress. Submission for symposium presentations is now open. Please send the information below by email in both PDF and MSWord formats by Thursday, October 11th, 2018 to psj2016k@yahoo.co.jp Please insert “Submission for symposium at 338th Regular Meeting” in the email subject and “338th Regular Meeting (Presenter’s name)” as the file name. <Guidelines for preparing symposium proposal>
- Time allocation: The symposium should be at least two hours but should not go over three hours. 20% of the time should be provided for Q&A including the audience.
- Presenters: There should be more than two presenters, and more than half of them should be members of the Phonetic Society of Japan. The symposium may have a chairperson and panel members (members or non-members).
- Topic: should be suitable as presentations at the Phonetic Society of Japan.
- Preparation: PR activities and operations on the symposium day will be supported by the Planning Committee. However, the organizer is fully responsible for any preparation before the symposium day. The Phonetic Society of Japan will not provide travelling expenses or rewards for presenters.

The 32nd General Meeting will be held in Okinawa in September 2018.
Submission for workshop proposals (morning of Day 2) is now open.
Please insert “Submission for workshop at 32nd General Meeting” in the email subject. The attached files should be named “psj2018workshop (name of organizer)”. We will send an email to notify the acceptance of submission within a few days. If you do not receive this email, please send an email again by June 22nd, as we may not have received your submission email.

【Guidelines for workshop submission】
- The organizer and presenters must be members of the Phonetics Society of Japan. Two or more presenters must be members of the Phonetic Society of Japan. Submission will be accepted if more than half of them are members. (They must be members at the time of submission or have finished with the application.) Please see http://www.psj.gr.jp/jpn/membership for details.
- The workshop may have panel members (members or non-members).
- The workshop will be two hours long. More than twenty minutes should be provided for Q&A including the audience.
- Workshops organized at or scheduled to be organized at other conferences will not be accepted.
- Presenters’ travel expenses and reward will not be provided.
- Notification of acceptance will be sent around June 27th, 2018. If accepted, please submit the full paper in PDF format by July 30th (Monday). Late submission may not be published in the proceedings.
- The paper format is the same as oral/poster presentations. There should be one page that explains the aims of the workshop. Presentation papers should be less than four pages each.
- Languages used for presentations are limited to Japanese and English. Please write the title and abstract in the same language. Papers should be written in the same language as the abstract, and presentations should be given in that language.
- Distribution of additional materials on the day of presentation is prohibited.
- Abstracts will be made public as is via attachment to the conference program on the PSJ website before the conference dates (excluding references).
- You will be asked to write a new abstract to be published in the Journal of Phonetic Society of Japan after the conference.
- Revisions on abstract, affiliation, collaborators, etc. will not be accepted after submission. Please double check before submission.
